A 30,000-person list-serve of Atlanta therapists. One asked: is it okay that I don't return calls? The chorus said yes, take care of yourself. I wrote back: bullshit.

I'm not a big fan of a lot of therapists. Some therapists are not very healthy. Some therapists don't know how to live. Some therapists don't have a good life, and they're coaching other people to have a good life.
Where I live in Atlanta, there's a 30,000-person listserv of therapists. And one therapist wrote, hey, I'm having trouble returning people's calls. I get a lot of calls. I don't call everybody back. Is that okay? And a bunch of therapists wrote back, yes, you need to take care of yourself.
I wrote back: bullshit. If someone has the desperation, the need to call you and ask for a therapy session and you can't see them, you owe it to them to call them back. Not within a week, not within two days — that day. Call them back. Say, hey, I'm full, I can't help you, but my buddy here has openings. Or, hey, I can't help you, but where you live in Gwinnett, there's this kind of therapist.
If you don't have the ability to call people back and you're a therapist coaching people how to lead a life of balance, you're not doing your job.
