I don't do much couples therapy anymore. I don't enjoy it. I do a lot of individual therapy, and I should have a sign over my office door. I don't, but I should. The sign should say: caution — individual therapy may be hazardous to your marriage.

Why? Because if I'm going to change and my partner's not going to change, we're going to grow more apart, not closer. If I'm going to change and my partner's going to change and we change in the same direction, we're going to be a much better couple. Sometimes I change and go that way, and she changes and goes that way, and we drift apart. That's not the end of the world if we want to reconnect.

But when one person changes and is in therapy and working on their own stuff, and the other person sits there and refuses to move an inch, the marriage is in jeopardy.

Had a reaction to this? Let's talk.
