Bob Earl had a kid late in life. Bob Earl called his mother up and said, mom, come meet your new granddaughter. Mom said, I can't wait to come. I can't wait to meet her. But my hip's bothering me. Bob said, okay, I'll call you in a couple weeks.

Couple weeks later, Bob said, how's your hip? Hip's better. Why don't you come meet your granddaughter? Mother says, I really want to. I can't wait to meet her. But I'm very busy at church right now. Give me a little bit of time.

Bob waits a month. Calls her up. Mom, come see her. Oh, Bob, I can't wait to meet her. Just the idea of getting on a plane and flying two hours to see you, and then we have to drive an hour — it just feels like too much for me. Three months goes by. Six months goes by. Every time Bob would say, mom, you want to meet your granddaughter, the mother would have another excuse.

Then one day, the mother calls up and says, oh, Bobby, Bobby, I'm so excited. Bob's like, what's up, mom? Mother says, me and the girls from church, we just signed up. We're going to Europe. We're going to see seven cities in 10 days. We're so excited.

Bob Earl said, that's great, mom. And he hung up. And that's when he realized his mother really doesn't want to see her new granddaughter.

The moral of the story: look at what people do, not what they say.
