I'm a generalist, and I'm proud of being a generalist. A lot of people don't want to be a generalist, but I am. I treat all kinds of people. The two number one groups that show up in my office are depressed people and anxious people. Why? Because that's the number one and two mental health concerns in America today. Sadness and anxiety. Depression and fear.

There's a cliché that I wanted to share with you because it may have some resonance, may have some meaning — which is: depressed people tend to live in the past. Anxious people tend to live in the future. That's helpful to me.

That second split second between those two claps — the moment — that's where life exists.

So my goal with therapy is to get people to live right now, in the moment. It's hard to be depressed in the moment. It's hard to be anxious in the moment. So try that. Again, easier said than done. That's why we therapists sometimes need to charge people.

Had a reaction to this? Let's talk.
