What did I not learn when I was a kid? One of the things I did not learn is how to apologize. In order to apologize, the first thing I needed to learn was to admit when I was wrong.
So I didn't learn that when I was a kid. It takes intelligence and health and honesty and just willingness to look at my own darkness, my own bad moves, to say, hey, I'm sorry.
The three steps
There's a technology to apologizing. First, I have to realize I have to apologize, and then I need to actually apologize. Step one: admit I made a mistake, acknowledge my role. Step two: once I admit responsibility, express regret. Say I'm sorry. Not a weak I'm sorry. A legit I'm sorry. I regret what I did. Step three: commit to being a better person.
I'm sorry. I made a mistake. It was my fault. And I'm going to do better next time. And then you actually have to do better.
Relationships tend to grow from that. They don't end because you made a mistake.
Had a reaction to this? Let's talk.
