A dad who's great in public — drop-off, dinners out. At home with the blinds drawn, he couldn't care less about his kids. Be good when no one's watching.

I had a friend who was very, very successful and was not a good dad. It wasn't easy for him. He'd rather work than be at home. Pretty obvious to me. He had a dad himself, but he never learned how to be a better dad.
At one point I said to his wife, how's he doing as a dad? And she said, well, he does great when it's public. I said, what does that mean? She said, he loves bringing the kids to school. I said, why? Everybody gets to see him being a dad. He likes taking them out to restaurants. But when we're home and the doors are closed and the blinds are drawn and no one's looking, he could care less about them.
I said, really? She said, yeah. I go, that's sad. She goes, I know.
If you're one of those dads that lights up when people are looking — cut that out. Be a good dad when nobody is looking. That's when it matters.
