A client with explosive anger finally got it. A pebble makes ripples. A boulder makes a splash. Ponds always respond perfectly. We don't — because we bring our history into it.

One of the reasons I love my job is clients teach me a lot, and they pay me for it.
I had this guy. We're dealing with his anger issues. He was exploding. Exploding at work, exploding at home, exploding with his kids. Ton of built-up childhood trauma. He wasn't able to release it. He was a mess.
He shows up one day in my office. He said, you wouldn't believe it. We had a training at work. I said, what happened? He said, it worked. This consultant said, all ponds are perfect. I said, I don't know what that means. He said, if you walk up to a pond and you throw a pebble in the pond, the pond's going to have little ripples. You go up to a pond, you take a big rock, you throw a big rock, it's going to be a huge splash. Never in the history of ponds has someone thrown a little pebble and had a huge splash. Never in the history of ponds has somebody thrown a big boulder and had mild ripples.
Ponds always respond perfectly. We don't — because we bring our history into it.
I said, that's what I've been telling you for months. He said, yeah, but I didn't understand it till today. Then I fired him. No, I'm only kidding.
Had a reaction to this? Let's talk.
